I just had dinner and ended up having some soy sauce. I didnt know...

now i've got a mild headache and my stomach is so bloated its scary.

What, if anything, can i do to lessen the symptoms and discomfort?

i hate this... i discovered my gluten intolerance a little over a month ago and i am just flabbergasted at how everything has wheat in it. Soy sauce? really? i thought it was soy!!! silly me.

yes, :) it is baffling how many hidden additives there are! there are some gluten free soy sauces, but when eating out just make sure your dish doesnt have msg or soy sauce when eating at thai/chinese restaurants. you can usually taste the difference when they do not add it. are there any other foods you need confirmation on being gluten free?? Please ask all your questions!!!!

For some really weird reason taking one 12 hour Claritin D stops most of the symptoms for me. I'm not sure why and don't know if it would work for others -- but worth a shot.

I usually have bad digestive symptoms, fatigue, and get stuffy and a headache after eating it.

Try some Ginger Tea. It gets your digestion moving and helps settle your stomach. It won't completely take away symptoms but it works for me.

I always drink Kombucha, which really helps to clear up my symptoms. Health food stores would be a good place to find it. Anything with acidophilus helps, like yogurt. Look for the probiotics section...

thank you Nora, Yasmin, Jennifer, and Jillean!

i always have fresh ginger on hand for making curry, so i had some ginger tea and that helped tremendously!

i will check out that Kombucha, Jillean!

i have mold/grass/tree allergies so i take a claritin everyday... which is probably why some of the other symptoms like hives, wheezing, stuffiness, etc are lessened for me. Its the bloating that scares me... i start to feel like the girl from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory who blew up like a big fat blueberry.

Last night i went out and had a beer. Damn it if my friend didn't hand me a wheat ale. BUT the only symptom i got was a little bit of gas. Funny how some things cause bad reactions and others don't.

Redbridge is a descent gluten free beer. A little hoppy but you won't get the gas and bloating. You want to stay away from regular beer. (it's like liquid wheat)
I haven't had any bloating issues since I went completely gluten free. I felt much like you do.

Ginger tea only helps me a little bit, and I can't take Claritin. Anyone have any other suggestions, especially for headaches and/or diarrhea? I can handle discomfort, but right now I'm feeling practically debilitated after accidentally eating two bites of dinner with enchilada sauce.

I've heard there are some herbal supplements I can take. Anyone know the names of any of them?

I think the Redbridge beer is good. I would recommend trying it. I get the same way with the bloating--my friends can totally tell when I've had gluten because it just pops out! I look like a blow fish!

I don't know of any for sure things that can help get rid of symptoms. When I accidentally have some gluten--I just try flushing it out of my system naturally. I drink a lot of water--to the point where I feel full on water--I drink cranberry juice (which is supposed to help detox your system) or tea. I also try to move around--if I'm not feeling up to a full work out sometimes I will just go for a walk. Being physical helps your digestive system pass things through faster.

Try Simethicone. It is a chewable tablet that is usually used for babies and small children for gas and bloating.

Kharyssa, did anyone tell you to get some Activated Charcoal capsules? My doctor told me that if I accidentally got into some soy, that this would help....

Hi all, I'm new to this forum but gluten intolerant my whole life. Avoidance is the only safety zone for me but not easy to pull off. When I happen to gluten, the best that works for me is to take one or two charcoal capsules for a day or two. BUT, must drink lots of water as the charcoal will bring on constipation, for me at least.
I am also taking aloe vera juice daily which is helping with less intense reactions when the gluten sneaks in.

Whole Foods (I'm sure other stores also have it) carries Gluten Ease..It seems to help lessen the symptoms. you can also take it ahead of time if you are unsure of cross-contamination. My daughter and I have both used it and it really seemed to help.

Another thing to try, those overnight capsules to cleanse the bowel, or fiber drinks to move it out faster.

Last Friday i went out with a friend for greek food and ordered the grape leaves (meat, rice, leaves - right? wrong!). i didn't know they are also loaded with tabouli (insert nasty swear word here)...i ate a ton of them! My holiday weekend was totally shot.

On Saturday i was hurting so bad that i gave in to a friend's advice (she's a holistic doc) and gave myself an enema. Half a cup of coffee and a teaspoon of olive oil in 1 quart of warm water. I know it sounds gross, but it was heavenly and i felt better almost instantly. Desperate times call for desperate measures... but it worked, and i thought i should share.

Oh she recommended MSM powder daily for 10 days to heal the intestines after eating gluten accidentally. She said it's smart to take this supplement daily whether or not you need the healing boost. Here's some info -- http://www.dazer.com/msm.jsp.

Tuesday after lunch I had the worst bloating and stomach pain/gurgling....I took some homeopathic arsenicum because it fit my symptom picture..the results were very quick...sparing you the gory details (lol)..I was symptom-free in about 45 minutes...feeling a little worn out tho. Had a great sleep that night and woke up completely fine the next morning...no residual bloat..no facial puffyness, no foggy head and pretty energized. Brilliant : )

Also, you would be surprised, but your cheap soy sauces are usuallythe ones that are wheat free. I've found it's the more expensive "national" brands that are made using wheat.

I was hiking the other day and someone handed me a slim jim--A SLIM JIM! And darn it if a few hours later they almost had to carry me the last 5 miles. Who would guess, but almost all beef jerky has wheat in it too? The weirdest things,...

I talked with my butcher, (I guess one advantage of living in a small town) because they make their own sausage, jerky etc. and he informed me that pretty much all of their "smoked" products have gluten in them. He stated the reason was that most of these products use Liquid Smoke and use a flour base to absorb the liquid. Since a lot of Jerky and beef sticks have "smoke" flavor they also have gluten. Altough it is possible to do it the old fashion natural way of actually smoking them, it is much much cheaper and quicker to use the liquid smoke.

water and cranberry juice are my solution. the only other suggestion is to go to sleep as soon as you eat something you shouldn't. it seems to speed things along.
